Buddhism in the Modern World

Please join us for a weekend course about “Buddhism in the Modern World” with Eckart Dross, a Buddhist teacher from Argentina. The course will include an overview of Diamond Way Buddhism and the important methods it uses for working with mind.

Simply put, Buddha’s teachings enable us to experience lasting happiness. By using suitable meditations, our theoretical knowledge turns into direct experience leading to the goal of Buddha’s teachings – the full development of body, speech and mind.

The teachings of Buddhism have remained a liberating gift to mankind for the last 2,450 years. Non-dogmatic and without any gods or commandments, they have enabled people to benefit both others and themselves. Especially today, with the many independent thinkers and new communication techniques, it has become possible to collect, organize and distribute Buddhist teachings, old as new, in attractive and fresh ways.

In today’s fast paced world, how can we use these timeless methods in our modern, busy lives?

Eckart Dross became Buddhist in 1998 and founded the Diamond Way Centre in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has been instrumental in setting up other centres and retreat places throughout South America. He has been travelling and teaching Buddhism internationally since 2005, giving lectures and courses on Buddhism at Lama Ole Nydahl’s request, throughout South America, Europe, Australia and Asia.

The course will start on Friday 2 September at 7.30pm with a public talk to introduce the course, and will continue on Saturday and Sunday at 10am on both days. Both weekend days will include a meditation session starting at 10am and a further talk with Eckart starting at 2pm.

The talks on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon will cost HK$80 (HK$50 for concessions) each to attend.

Venue: Diamond Way Buddhist Centre Hong Kong, 2/F, 3-5 Jervois Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

All are welcome to attend and translation into Cantonese will also be available. We look forward to seeing you there!

Weekend Meditation Practice

We’re starting a regular weekend meditation practice session on Saturday at 11am. Each and every week, we will meet together to continue with our personal meditation practice whether it is the 16th Karmapa meditation, Refuge meditation, Ngondro practices, etc.

The idea behind the day is to give each other some support and a friendly push to continue with our own practice. The day is useful for those who want to know more about integrating meditation practice in their daily lives and have the opportunity to meditate with others in a group setting.

All are welcome to attend and it is free to come. If you need instructions on starting a particular meditation practice, we’ll also have time for explanations.

In Buddhism, meditation means “effortlessly remaining in what is.” This state may be brought about by calming and holding the mind, by realizing compassion and wisdom, or by working with the body’s energy channels and meditating on Buddha forms of light and energy. The most effective methods are the constant identification with one’s own potential to be a Buddha and experiencing the richness of every situation in life; both of which are taught in the Diamond Way. When one understand that the seer, what is seen, and the act of seeing are not separate from each other, the goal has been reached.

Hope to see you there!

March Meditation Madness

Please join us for meditation every day at 8pm for the rest of the month – its time for March Meditation Madness!

We will be practising the 16th Karmapa Meditation  – the methods employed in this meditation have been used in Buddhism since the time of the Buddha 2,500 year ago. Focused on fully developing the human potential, the meditation brings about lasting results for those who not only want to learn about their minds, but have a direct experience of it. The meditation will always be preceeded by a short talk from one of the members of the centre – so if you are new to Buddhism, it is an ideal place to start. Our address is:

Unit 3, 2nd Floor,
3-5 Jervois Street,
Sheung Wan,
Hong Kong

* Our centre is conveniently located in a quiet street in the Central / Sheung Wan area, a short walk from either MTR station. There are various bus routes that run up and down either Queen’s Road Central or Des Voeux Road Central, and we are also very close to the tram.

Phowa 2011

We’re very excited to announce that Lama Ole Nydahl will be coming to Hong Kong again in 2011 to lead another Phowa course.

The practice of conscious dying or Phowa is one of the most profound teachings of Diamond Way Buddhism. During this practice one learns to transfer one’s consciousness at the moment of death into a state of highest bliss.

We now have the extraordinary opportunity to complete this powerful practice with Lama Ole Nydahl, a great Phowa Master who has taught this method to tens of thousands of people around the world. This course is suitable for beginners (after having completed a preparatory meditation practice) and Lama Ole starts the retreat with an introduction to Buddhism. This course also enables us to help others at the time of their death.

Details of the course can be found here and you can register online for the course here.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

The teacher-student relationship

Please join us for a special Wednesday evening meditation session on 1 September, as Michael Fuchs will give a talk about this central topic of Diamond Way Buddhism. According to the highest level of Buddha’s teachings, the teacher  is so important because we see him or her not as a person or god but as a mirror to one’s own potential. Showing us our timeless nature with countless skillful means, here the teacher actually represents the Buddha. For more information, please take a look at this article by Lama Ole Nydahl.

The evening will start as usual at 8.15pm at Studio on Queen’s (2F, 55 Queen’s Road Central (Entrance on Li Yuen St. West), Central) *

There will be a chance to ask questions and take part in a guided meditation.

We look forward to seeing you there.

* The studio is conveniently located opposite H&M on Queen’s Road Central and reachable by most forms of public transportation (MTR Central Station; numerous buses on Des Voeux Road Central; tram; taxi stand right in front of the studio).
